Satsuma is the name of Japanese porcelain, which was developed in the 16th century by Korean craftmen who settled in the Satsuma region. It reached its highest point in Edo period (1603-1686) when in Satsuma workshops produced the tableware of various shapes and for various purpose. Major topics on Satsuma porcelain were scenes from the Imperial court life and the battles of samurais. In the porcelain of the Edo period alongside with the opaque colors a lot gold was used.
