12-stepped altar, cross symbol on a post, close up

Georgia Museums, Vani Archeological Museum, Georgia

A 12-stepped altar and depository belong to the second construction phase (2nd-1st Centuries BC). The lower six steps are rectangular and the upper six are semicircular. Adjoining the steps to the west is a rectangular platform.

The depository stood within 6m of the altar on a slight elevation. It was in the form of a wooden structure plastered with clay. The offerings found in it included 150 pyramidal clay weights for a vertical loom, clay bowls, jugs, red-painted thymaterial (ritual vessels for the fire), iron daggers and spearheads, bronze umbos, a variety of beads, a silver medallion with a deity(Artemis) in high relief, silver statuettes of Apollo and ornamented gold plaques.

Nearby, finds were made of numerous fragments of bronze statuettes. An especially noteworthy object was a fragment of a bronze plaque with a greek inscription.
