Gold vessel with a cross design

Cross design on a gold vessel. The Nagyszentmiklos treasure: a part of the khaganate treasury of the Late Avar period.

The table set composed of 23 golden vessels has been described by Istvan Bona as "unparalleled evidence of Late Avar culture, scripture, language, art, religion and mythology". The treasure was hidden in the vicinity of Nagyszentmiklos at the beginning of the 9th century in attempt to hide it from the Frankish attack. The original pieces are held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The exhibited copies were made in the Hungarian Ste Mint at the end of the 19th century.
