The middle of the 7th Century B.C. was the start of a new era for the population inhabiting the lowlands and hilly regions to the east of the Danube. This area became part of a cultural unit which was established by the Scythian people who belonged to the Iranian language family and originated from the Steppes lying north of the Black Sea. The Scythian population arriving to the Great Hungarian Plain preserved its independent culture up to the Celtic conquest in the middle of the 4th century B.C. The Scythians established far-reaching economic and commercial ties which had a lasting effect on crafts and art.
