Horse burial tradition of Balts

Tumiany, north-eastern Poland, grave no V containing three horse burials (after T. Baranowski)

A specific tradition among the Balts was horse burial. The animals were deposited within graves, without being cremated, to accompany warriors in afterlife or were buried separately. Finds discovered inside horse burials include elements of horse harness, including elaborate richly ornamented horse trappings. In some areas of the Balt territory the tradition of horse burials persisted well into the Early Medieval period.
