The big whorl in the middle of the stone was probably painted several colors originally. It may have symbolized the sun rolling across the sky. The whorl is the commonest motif on the oldest Iron Age petroglyphs. Under the wheel are two horses rearing up at each other. Horses are often associated with the sun. Old Norse tradition had it that they pulled the sun across the sky. Here are shown in what may be a stallion-baiting scene. Icelandic sagas describe stallions being pitted against each other. Perhaps afterwards the best animals were sacrified to the gods.
