Beadwork

These moccasins, warrior shirt, leggings, cuffs and bags are decorated with beadwork. The patterns are derived from quillwork designs created by Plains women before contact with Europeans. When Europeans arrived they brought beads for trade, which gradually began to replace quillwork. 'Pony' beads were carried by traders via pony-pack trains in the 1800s. Smaller, more colorful 'seed beads' arrived on the Plains from the 1840s.
