Cross design on a floor mosaic

Floor mosaic (above)

This is the decorative center panel of a mosaic floor from a Roman villa at Abbots Ann, Hampshire. Its red, white and grey design comprises a stylized flower surrounded by concentric circles. The villa contained other mosaic floors, confirming that it was once a grand residence. It stood near a road linking Silchester and Old Sarum, major towns in southern Roman Britain.

A.D. 250 - 350. Abbots Ann, Hampshire, donated by Thomas Best through Revarend J. Best, 1854, 0623.2
