Cross inside a square on the wardrobe of a guardsman

Glazed brick guardsman

This was part of a frieze depicting rows of guards. The vivid colors show how the carved stone sculptures would have looked when they were painted. The guards are thought to be members of the 1000 special royal guards. They were said to have formed part of the royal army known as the 'immortals' because their strength was always apparently maintained at this level.
