Statue of Pesshuper, Christian cross

European Museums, The British Museum

A cartouche on Pas-shuper's right shoulder encloses the name of the princess he served: Amenirdis I. She was a 'God's Wife of Amun', one in a series of royal daughters sent to Thebes to officiate as ceremonial wives of the god Amun-Ra. This enabled royal control over the Theban clergy.

25th Dynasty, reign of Shabaqo (about 716 - 702 B.C.) or Shabitqo (about 702 - 690 B.C.)

From Thebes, North Karnak
