Statue of Senwosret III, pierced heart-like pendant

European Museums, The British Museum

Pierced heart-like pendant on the statue of Senwosret III.

Senwosret III erected six such statues in the mortuary temple of Montuhotep II. This way he paid tribute to the king who had founded the Middle Kingdom two centuries earlier, and who continued to be revered. Senwosret was an authoritative reformer and campaigned in Nubia and Palestine. He, too, would be remembered as one of Egypt's greatest pharaohs.

12th Dynasty, reign of Senworsret III (about 1874-1855 B.C.)
