'He looks at those effigies and utters blasphemies...' About 539 B.C. From Babylon, southern Iraq. During the reign of Nabonidus (556-539 B.C.) Babylon fell to the Persian king, Cyrus. Nabonidus' reign was a troubled one. His unpopularity led to this poem, ridiculing Nabonidus and praising Cyrus.
