Text, Darius seal

European Museums, The British Museum

Darius seal. This famous cylinder-seal shows the Persian King Darius I (521 - 486 B.C.) standing in a chariot firing arrows at a lion. The inscription reads 'Darius, Great King'. The seal was not a personal seal of Darius but probably belonged to a member of his administration. The chariot resembles the gold chariot model in the Oxus Treasure. The winged sun-disc at the top is believed to be the Zoroastrian deity Ahura Mazda. Thebes, Egypt
