Text, gilded mount revealed from x-rays

European Museums, The British Museum

X-rays of a bundle of textiles, wood and feathers from the grave also revealed this beautiful gilded mount hidden inside. Its form and decoration suggest it was made in Ireland or Scotland during the A.D. 700s - 800s, demonstrating Viking contacts overseas. Remains of a pin added on the back show that the mount was made into a brooch for wearing. A.D. 700s - 800s. Lille berge, Namdalen, Norway, 1891,1021.75, 73-74 and 68-72 1891,1021.78.
