Text, Lid, large bowl, with four grazing horses and a foal

European Museums, The British Museum

Lid of a large bowl, with four grazing horses and a foal. Protoattic, made in Athens about 700 B.C.; attributed to the Analatos Painter. The horses' manes and tails are freely and more realistically painted than in the geometric and earlier protoattic styles. The wavy lines, lozenges and cable patterns are among the most popular filling ornaments of this time.
