Wood, wool

Huichol people, Jalisco State, Mexico, 20th century.

Crosses like this are used in harvest ceremonies when children are taken on a symbolic pilgrimage to Wirikuta. The number of diamonds indicates the number of times a child has made the journey.

Consulting Huichol shamans

Among the Huichol people in Mexico, shamans are responsible for the spiritual and physical welfare of individuals and the community.

Whether they live in the high mountain ranges of the western Sierra Madre, or in recently formed urban settlements, the shamans' main duties are to preside over rituals and pilgrimages, sing sacred songs and leave prayer offerings at special places across the landscape. These rituals help to protect and restore the delicate balance between the world of the living and the spiritual between the world of the living and the spiritual and natural realms.
