Hermatite and faience seals, snake-like symbol

Istanbul Archaeology Museums, Turkey

Seal with a snake-like, superman design.

One of the most frequently encountered motif on the hematite and faience seals of the Mitannian Period is the stylized date palm. The motifs such as winged sun disc, adoration scenes, antithetical or sitting back to back bulls and goats inside scenes were also much loved.

Kassite seals with inscription, on which there is only one god in a sitting position, continue the tradition of the Old Babylonian Period.

In the Neo-Assyrian and the Neo-Babylonian Period seal manufacturing shows parallel development. On the seals, manufactured with linear drill method, besides themes of ploughing and sieging a city, scenes of adoration, sacrifice, hunting are seen. The most loved motifs are the sacred three and the winged sun disc.
