The song of Ullikummis
The most interesting Hittite legend embodying the characteristics of Hurrian mythology is the one related to Kumarbis, the father of the gods. Tesup has taken the place of Kumarbis at the head of the divine kingdom. Kumarbis abhors this and wants to recover the sovereignty the help of a monster that he himself creates. With his intention, he sleeps with a rock and a child born to him. He names this child Ullikummis which means 'destroyer of Kummiya'. When this child grown, he wants him to go to the sacred city of the gods to beat down and annihilate Tesup, the Storm-god. Since he wants the child to remain unknown to the other gods and especially Tesup, he sends word to the gods of Irsirra: "... When Impaluris (Kumarbis' messenger) heard these words, he took his staff in his hand, put his shoes on his feet and journeyed. Impaluris betook himself to the Irsirra deities. Impaluris began to speak these words to the Irsirra deities: 'Come ye here! Kumarbis, the father of the gods, is calling you. But the errand on which he is calling you, ye are not know! Hasten and come!' When the Irsirra deities heard the words, they hastened and hurried. They set forth and journeyed and they covered the distance without stopping a single time. They betook themselves to Kumarbis and Kumarbis began to speak to the Irsiira deities: 'Take ye this child and carry him with you! Bring him to the dark earth. Hasten and hurry! Place him -a shaft- upon Ubelluris right shoulders! In one day he shall increase a cubit, in one month he shall increase one acre..."
Ubelluris is a giant who carries the world on his shoulders. Ullikummis grows up rapidly on his shoulders and in the sea. We learn from tablet fragments that Ullikummis fights with Tesup. But, as these tablets are in pieces and destroyed, we do not know how the battle goes or who the winner is.
