The silenus Marsyas, who dared to challenge the god Apollo to a music contest, which he lost, was condemned to be skinned alive. The original statue, now lost, is known thanks to several copies, and was part of a group that included Apollo looking on while a Scythian slave sharpened his knife.

Pour avoir osé défier le dieu Apollon dans un concours musical, le silene Marsyas, vaincu, fut condamné à être écorché vit La statue originale, aujourd'hui perdue mais connue par de nombreuses répliques, prenait place dans un groupe montrant Apollon assistant à la scene tandis qu'un esclave scythe aiguisait son couteau.
