British intervention in the administration of the Malay States, the rule of James Brooke in Sarawak and the North Borneo Company's management of Sabah all sparked reactions from the local populations. Freedom fighters emerged who defended the dignity and sovereignty of their individual lands. In Kedah, it was Sultan Abdullah who gathered forces in 1791 to attack the British in Penang; in Naning, it was Penghulu Dol Said. In Perak, the responsibility lay with several leaders i.e. Sultan Abdullah, Sultan Ismail, Dato' Maharaja Lela Pandak Lam, Dato' Sagor Ngah Kamdin, Menteri Ngah Ibrahim, Laksamana Wan Muhammad Amin and Shahbandar Uda Mahamor. In Negeri Sembilan, it was Dato' Shahbandar (Abdullah Tunggal) and Yamtuan Tunku Antah. In Pahang, it was Dato' Bahaman, Tok Gajah (Imam Perang Rasul), Mat Kilau and Mat Lela. In Kelantan, Tok Janggut (Haji Mat Hasan bin Munas), Engku Besar Jeram and Tuan Ahmad took up the responsibility; in Terengganu, it was Haji Abdul Rahman Limbong. In Sawarak, Rentap, Sherif Masahor and Datu Patinggi Abdul Gapur stepped forward and in Sabah, it was Datu Muhammad Salleh, Mat Sator, Si Gunting
