Reconstruction of a panel from a chance screen

Bode Museum

A highly intricate and detailed piece of decorative art, a fragment from a panel chance screen.

The design is centered on a geometric and interlacing pattern, a central cross, interlaced vines, and rosette motif.

At the very heart of the circular carving is a simple cross with equal arms.

Surrounding the central cross is a complex, knotted pattern of what appears to be interlaced vines and stylized leaves. This interlace pattern is a common motif in early medieval art, particularly in Celtic and Byzantine traditions.

The overall circular design resembles a rosette or a wheel, with four main sections radiating outward from the center.
