Shen Ring and Duat Symbol, Sarcophagus of Anch-Hor

Neues Museum

At the outermost edges of the panel, two vertically oriented emblems are prominently incised. Each combines a shen ring at its base with a duat symbol above, the two joined by a continuous vertical shaft. The composite motif may be interpreted as a symbolic representation of transition and ascension. The lower ring, resting upon a base, suggests grounding or the "foundation of eternity," echoing the shen ring's traditional associations with protection and everlasting continuity. The vertical shaft delineates a path or axis uniting the terrestrial and celestial realms, guiding the soul's passage from earth to the afterlife. The upper droplet-shaped loop enclosing a star or cross corresponds to the duat symbol, representing the celestial domain or realm of the dead - the ultimate destination of the soul's ascent - where the star signifies divine radiance, regeneration, and eternal life within the realm of the gods.
