Text, Byzantine reliquary with cross motifs

Neues Museum

A small Early Byzantine gypsum reliquary shaped like a sarcophagus, carved with two circular cross medallions on one side. Each medallion contains a four-armed cross with pointed terminals and small circular symbols in the quadrants. The left medallion is surrounded by a radiant border, while the right is enclosed by a smooth circular frame. Produced in the Apamene region of Syria in the 5th-6th century AD, the box once held sacred relics and reflects Christian themes of protection, sanctity, and resurrection.
