Text, Roman Barbarian treasure

The Neupotz hoard, found in a Palatine gravel pit between 1967 and 1981, is the largest collection of Roman metallic articles discovered north of the Alps, totaling over 1000 objects and about 700 kg. Concealed for 1700 years, the "Barbarian Treasure" originated in the 3rd century AD when Germanic tribes raided Roman provinces along the Rhine and Danube. The plunder was lost while the raiders attempted to cross the Rhine, either due to underestimating the river's dangers or being intercepted by the Roman Rhine fleet. The unique collection is now displayed long-term at the Neues Museum, thanks to the kindness of the owners, the brothers Ludwig and Willi Kuhn.
