Upper body close up. Worship of Re in The West, Litany of Re

Neues Museum

A segment of a religious papyrus from the 21st Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period), containing a hymn or prayer (the Litany of Re) addressed to the sun god Re, specifically concerning his journey through the underworld (the west) and its vital role in the deceased's path to eternal life, written in a more fluid style of hieroglyphs suitable for papyrus. The inverted figure on the previously described papyrus fragment could easily be an illustration from such a text, depicting one of the many forms or aspects of Re or a related deity during his nocturnal voyage.
