MAGIC SIGNS
Magical signs such as divine symbols, but also inscriptions, were of great importance to the people of the ancient Near East and formed an important part of the visual canon of cylinder seals.
On the Kassite seal from Babylon, for example, only a small part of the surface is decorated with figures; the largest space is occupied by a text with a prayer to a goddess. A small praying person stands in front of the extensive inscription and several symbols. These include a crouching dog, a cross and a diamond. The dog, presented here in the form of a small sculpture, is considered a symbolic animal of the goddess of salvation Gula.
