Prison of Socrates barred gate

Acropolis, Athens, Greece

The so called Prison of Socrates consists of a series of rock cut chambers carved into the limestone face of Filopappos Hill. Although later tradition linked the structure to the imprisonment of Socrates, no ancient source supports this identification, and the chambers more likely belonged to a utilitarian or sanctuary complex. The barred entrance seen today marks one of the carved openings, which in modern times have been secured to protect the interior and preserve the archaeological fabric of the site.
