Reconstruction of the Athena Parthenos
Acropolis Museum, Athens, Greece
This image illustrates a full reconstruction of the Athena Parthenos, the colossal chryselephantine statue that was the cult centerpiece of the Parthenon. Though the original statue by Pheidias is lost, its appearance is known through various Roman copies, like the one this illustration is based upon. The goddess is depicted in her full glory, embodying her dual roles as a warrior and the patron of Athens.
The contrast between the pale, ivory-colored flesh and the rich, golden garments and armor highlights the luxurious chryselephantine technique used by Pheidias, where gold was beaten over a wooden core and ivory was used for exposed skin. Key iconographic features include the aegis on her breast, her intricate helmet, and the prominent shield and serpent (representing the mythical ancestor Erichthonios) at her feet.
