Clay storage jars on display

Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens, Greece

Material: Fired clay (earthenware)
Date range: 6th century AD
Origin: Myrsinidessa basilica, Stamata, Attica, Greece

Two large, unglazed terracotta storage jars, typically known as pithoi.

The left vessel is more elongated with a narrower mouth, identified as a clay storage jar from a Hellenistic tomb near the basilica of Stomati, Attica. The right jar is rounder with a wider opening, which shows cross-stamp imprints at shoulder level.

Both vessels reflect utilitarian forms typical of late antique domestic and ecclesiastical contexts.
