Silver patens and censer

Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens, Greece

Material: Silver
Date range: 7th century AD
Origin: Unknown (likely Byzantine period)

A collection of Christian silver artifacts. The objects include: A large, circular hammered silver plate or paten with a central relief motif of a solar cross, a cross set within a circular design resembling a sun with leaf-like rays. Directly below the large paten is a smaller, similar circular silver plate or paten, also with a solar cross design.

To the right of the plates are four small silver spoons with shallow, round bowls and long, narrow handles. These are part of a larger collection of silver tableware, including patens, plates, and spoons, dated to the 7th century.

Hanging from a thin chain above the objects is a small, deep, cup-shaped silver censer.

Museum label reference: Silver tableware: patens, plates, spoons. 7th c.
