Third gate of the Acrocorinth fortress

Corinth, Greece

This gateway represents one of the multiple layers of security designed to protect the sacred peak, which was home to the Temple of Aphrodite and several significant springs. The architectural transition from the narrow, dark tunnel into the bright open citadel mirrored a spiritual journey for ancient pilgrims ascending to the temple, moving from the profane world into the divine precinct of the goddess.

During the medieval era, the gate served to protect the religious pluralism within the walls, where Christian churches and later Ottoman mosques occupied the same holy ground. The sturdy stone vaulting and defensible position ensured that the community’s places of worship remained secure against invaders, preserving the site's status as a spiritual refuge for over two millennia.
