Egyptian scarabs and rebirth symbolism

National Archeological Museum, Athens, Greece

Material: Stone or faience (typical for scarabs)
Date range: Various periods of ancient Egypt
Origin: Ancient Egypt

Scarabs were worn or carried as seals, rings, or amulets. Their flat reverse often bore inscriptions.

They symbolized rebirth and were especially popular in funerary contexts, linked to resurrection and divine judgment.

Figures of gods, fertility symbols, and personal names made each scarab a unique spiritual token.

Museum label reference:

Scarabs symbolized rebirth and were therefore popular objects both for the living and the dead.

The living used scarabs as seals, amulets, or rings. Those scarabs bore blessings, symbols of fortune and fertility, figures of deities, the names and titles of their owners, even royal names, inscribed or depicted on the flat reverse.

Scarabs were the most popular of funerary jewellery, as they offered hope for justice during the weighing of the heart ceremony, and for resurrection.
