National Archeological Museum, Athens, Greece

This is a Pentelic marble funerary statue of a Siren from the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos in Athens. The winged female figure is shown with one large wing raised and holding a lyre made from a tortoise shell, used to sing laments for the deceased. The statue shows careful detail in the carved hair and body, though the right hand that held the plectrum is now missing.
