Gold naiskos with Dionysos and Satyr

National Archeological Museum, Athens, Greece

Material: Gold, garnets, emeralds
Date range: 2nd century BC
Origin: Ancient Greece

This small gold shrine shows Dionysos, the god of wine, with a Satyr companion. The figures are shown in relief within a temple-like frame with columns and a decorated triangular roof at the top.

The piece is decorated with red garnets and green emeralds set into the gold surface. The shrine shape copies Greek temple design with its pointed roof and side columns.

This type of small temple shrine was likely worn as jewelry or kept as a sacred object. The scene shows Dionysos in a drinking scene with the Satyr, connecting to worship of the wine god.
