Religious vessels and holy crosses

National Archeological Museum, Athens, Greece

Material: Silver
Date range: Byzantine period
Origin: Byzantine Empire

The large silver chalice and the small bowl were used during the holy service to hold wine and bread. These vessels are covered in beautiful patterns and figures that tell stories of faith and remind the people of the sacred nature of the meal.

The wooden crosses are known as blessing crosses and were used by priests to give holy signs to the people. Each cross is carved with very tiny, detailed scenes from the life of Christ, turning a simple piece of wood into a powerful tool for teaching religious history.

The other small silver items in the case were likely used for holding holy water or oil during different religious rites.
