Zeus or Poseidon bronze statue

National Archeological Museum, Athens, Greece

This is a monumental bronze statue of a bearded god found in the sea near Cape Artemision, showing the deity in a powerful striding stance with both arms extended. His left arm stretches forward while his right hand would have held either a thunderbolt (if Zeus) or a trident (if Poseidon), now missing. The muscular nude figure displays the idealized anatomy and dynamic movement characteristic of the Severe Style period of Greek sculpture.
