Menorah with a three-point symbol in the middle. 3 Relief with Judaic decoration: candlestick, palm and trumpet. Gadara (Umm Qais, Jordan), 4th-5th Century A.D. Basalt. This stele represents one of the most common motifs of Judaic symbolism: the menorah (candlestick with seven branches), flanked by the shofar (a wind instrument used during rites) and the lulab (a palm made of myrtle, willow and of palm). These symbols, commemorating the Temple of Jerusalem (and its golden menorah), occupied religious art as well as funerary or even domestic art. Don E de Sauley, 1851-18701; dan AQ AQ 5142
